Marangu Route to Uhuru Peak is the most popular, easiest, and shortest. This route is also called the Tourist Route or the Coca Cola Route. Because it’s mostly easy hiking, 70% of climbers take this route. This route is easy but the summit is difficult. Although this rout is the easiest, it has the highest failure rate due to bad preparation. This route should be taken seriously, organized, and safe.
All camps on this route sell chocolates, beer, soft drinks, and mineral water and have radio contact with the Park Office. The only campsite on Kilimanjaro with beds and mattresses, the Horombo hut, is recommended for acclimatization.
The Marangu route, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its ease, is the most popular way to summit Kilimanjaro.
The Roof of Africa can be conquered in five days for time-pressed travellers.
Day 1 – Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
After being picked up from your lodging in Arusha, you travel to Kilimanjaro National Park. Here, you communicate with your guides and start your ascent through the lush rainforest that covers Kilimanjaro lower slopes. When you hike
for 5–6 hours through this old jungle, you can see animals like black-and-white
colobus monkeys and have a mini-safari. You will spend the night in the nice
Mandara Huts, which have flush toilets and solar lights for your comfort. You
won be seeing those anytime soon, I assure you!
Day 2 – Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
You leave bright and early today because you have a long hiking day planned!
As you travel more than 11 kilometers to the Maundi Crater on today hike, the
lush rainforest gives way to the bleak alpine region. Before retiring for the
evening, if the weather is clear, you can enjoy breath-taking views of Kibo Glacier
from this location.
Day 3 – Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut
It’s another big day of hiking today, as you’ll make your way to Kibo Hut to set up
camp ahead of your summit attempt. Climbing almost 1,000m, you’ll pass your
last watering point at the 4,130m mark before arriving at Kibo Hut in the
afternoon. Remember to drink plenty of water during your early dinner, as you’ll
be up bright and early tomorrow to begin your ascent to the summit!
Day 4 – Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
Today, youre getting an early start to the day—just after midnight! As you get
dressed and organize your daypack for the adventure ahead, your climbing team
will wake you up with a cup of hot tea and a light snack for energy. Take it slow;
you be hiking in complete darkness for the next 5-7 hours. This way, you get
to Stella Point just before dawn. Your next two hours of arduous hiking will take
you to Uhuru Peak, your ultimate destination. Standing at 5,985 meters, you'll be
able to witness an amazing sunrise and enjoy the expansive view. You've
succeeded. Returning to Horombo Hut via Kibo Hut is the next step. This will
undoubtedly be one of the heaviest days of your life, requiring anywhere from 12
to 16 hours of hiking!
Day 5 – Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi
You have one last breakfast on the mountain today before descending to the
Marangu Gate, so today is a festive day. Although today walk is almost 20
kilometers, the steady downhill makes it much easier than the ascent. When you
arrive at the gate, you can celebrate with your porters and guides, give them tips
for their labor, and get your completion certificate. After that, your driver will drive
you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha so you can get some well-deserved rest.
